### Summary
**NOTE**: **This positions are a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed (NTE) 09/30/2019)**. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
This Lead Social Services Assistant functions as an interdisciplinary team member, assisting physician nd other professional/non-professional personnel in a whole health partnership. This position functions as a Lead over three or more like positions. The position performs a variety of technical roles that include welcoming Veterans into the local system, orienting them to Whole Health (WH) concepts, offering a variety of points of entry into partnership with VHA, coordinating and connecting Veterans to resources and programs based on preferences, assisting them in articulating their goals for health and well-being, learning and practicing new self-care skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their health plans, supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services and providing tools and resources to assist in navigating the Whole Health System.
This position is located within the VA Boston Healthcare System, Duty location: West Roxbury, MA.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00 am to 5:00 pm

### Responsibilities
* Major duties include:
* Distributes and balances the workload of the teams schedule and delivery of the programs.;
* Keeps in touch with the status and progress of work, and make day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities;
* Maintains records of work accomplishments and time expended, and prepare production reports as requested;
* Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies;
* Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refer others to supervisor;
* Provides information to supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs;
* Assists the Veterans to explore core elements of personal health planning;
* Facilitates outreach activities to inform Veterans and family members of programs available;
* Assists Veterans in articulating their goals for health and well-being;
* Assists Veterans navigate through the Whole Health program (pathway, health and well-being programs, clinical care);
* Assists the Veteran in exploring options for participating in individual or group programs to explore the following core elements: Self-Assessment using Components of Health and Well-being/COH; Set goals/actions; identify support/follow-up; and
* All other duties as assigned.

### Qualifications
**ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:** In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

To meet the minimum qualifications for the Lead Social Services Assistant, GS-0186-07, you must meet one of the following:**
**Experience:**You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Lead Social Services Assistant, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience includes serving as a group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs; serving as a counselor in a youth summer camp; serving as an instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; performing work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; serving as a group activities leader in the Armed Services; serving as a unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility; serving as an aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development; serving as an aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities; serving as an aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs. Additional specialized experience includes giving advice, counsel and instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters'; distributing and balancing the workload of a team's schedule and delivery of the programs; developing internal and external resource material, training in a programs curriculum; conducting outreach activities to inform patients and family members of programs available; welcoming patients into a facilities local system, orienting them to health concepts, offering a variety of points of entry into partnership and coordinating and connecting them to resources and programs; assisting patients with monitoring their progress, assisting them in their health plans, supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. **NOTE**: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
**OR**
**Education:**Successfully completed at least one (1) full year of graduate level education or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Lead Social Services Assistant position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. **NOTE**: Transcripts (unofficial) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
**OR**
**Combination:**Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Lead Social Services Assistant position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. **NOTE**: Transcripts (unofficial) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

### Additional information
**Physical Requirements:** The work will involve using a laptop computer at docking stations in staff cubicles/office space, outpatient treatment rooms, and group/conference rooms. The work will involve walking around to different workspaces within the clinic and thus conveying a patient- centered environment where providers go to the patient. The physical demands include presenting oneself in an energetic way to create positive attitudes about health and well-being for Veterans, families, VA employees, and stakeholders. The position is responsible for participating in and facilitating group-based and individual classes for Veteran patients and must be able to move from site to site to facilitate such classes.

**Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:**Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
