This posting is for an Research Engineer in the Advanced Materials - Interlayers Technology Division located in Springfield, MA. Responsibilities of this position include developing novel extrusion and sheet handling processes and equipment for the production of various high performance interlayer films and optimization of existing manufacturing processes.





Major Responsibilities include:


o Lead efforts to develop state-of-the-art technologies with significant product quality improvement, capacity expansion and cost reduction implications, utilizing knowledge in the areas of polymer rheology, polymer processing operations, extrusion, mixing, fluid mechanics and advanced melt flow computational methods, and supporting existing projects and operations in this area


o Plan & conduct development activities including the specification / design of new equipment and the establishment of new operating parameters from pilot scale testing through commercialization


o Plan & conduct development activities, to provide process support for new product development programs from pilot scale testing through commercialization


o Provide technical support as needed to manufacturing and customer operations for process issues through troubleshooting and process optimization activities


o Provide project support as a Technical or Process Representative in both Design & Development and New Facility Projects


o Interface with Manufacturing, Marketing, customers and external contacts


o Stay up-to-date on current developments in the latest polymer process technology





The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:





- A PhD or Masters degree in Polymer / Chemical / Mechanical / Macromolecular Engineering or equivalent with specialization in Polymer Processing is required


- Minimum 3 years relevant industrial or academic experience is preferred


- Extensive knowledge and practical experience in the modeling, design, development and application of polymer processing machinery, in particular single and twin screw extruder design, compounding, melt mixing and blending, plasticizer/resin mixing technologies, flat film and sheet forming, melt fracturing, and sheet/film handling is required


- Modeling experience with 3D CAD, FEM/FEA, and CFD modeling of polymer extrusion and sheet forming processes and equipment is strongly preferred, as is experience with the analysis and validation of simulation predictions


- Self-starter, driven by the discovery and implementation of the latest polymer processing technologies


- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team


- Attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills


- Strong commitment to task and ability to organize / prioritize and execute assignments in a high activity environment


- Strong background in the principles of Process Engineering including scale-up concepts


- Willingness to travel to the world-wide Saflex® manufacturing sites and work with outside vendors
